***School***

Mark Devan John Carty Andrew Millar Matthew Morris Tracey Roades Neil Swaby

Although School is something I'm pretty sure I wouldn't like to have to go through again I can't remember it being all that bad. The Schools in question are 'Grange Infants and Grange Middle School' and 'Western Comprehensive' all neatly packaged onto one field that once upon a time was farmland in Grimsby.

I wasn't totally hot on school and this was worsened by being advanced a year while I was around nine years old. Being taken away from my peers and plonked into a class in the year above (with pupils who didn't take too kindly to being infiltrated in such a way.)

This may be seen as quite fortunate by some but as I didn't have a camera of my own until I was 17 I don't have any photos of school friends as children (and I'm not crazy enough to show photos of myself as a straggly 12 year old.) Also there are so many people who could appear here as there were on average between 25-28 students in a class but unfortunately due to space limitations will not do so (in some cases because they were complete wankers.) To all who do appear and all who don't - good luck in the world. May you all find something to fulfill your lives.

Photos from School

One of the only photos I have of my schoolmates is from this shot from a Western Secondary School Play when we would have been 12 years old (ca 1982.) If you click on the sets of girls at either side, you'll be able to see an enlarged shot of their profiles. I'm in the middle, somewhere, so seeing as no faces are visible I haven't bothered including an enlarged version of the centre.

Second from the left here is Tracey Roades then next visible is Sharon Smith, then second next is Tracy Bramley. Unfortunately they're the only names I can remember there.

The only two whose names I can really remember are second from right Nicola Lee and far right Rachael Hose (Rachael would be mine and Nicola would be Mark Dunn's ... maybe one day.)

Here I am between two Tracys! On the left is Tracy Roades who you can also see above and who I went to school with from Grange infantsTracey, I and Tracy through to Western Comp. and on the right is Tracy Warren. It's the first time I'd seen Tracy (Roades) for years and now she has her own family. We were in 'Waves' in Cleethorpes for my 29th birthday.

Mark Devan

Mark Devan (formerly Dunn) has been one of my best friends all the way from being 5 years old. As far as we were concerned one day Rachel Hose would be mine and Nicola Lee (Rachels best friend) would be his. Not a chance but we weren't deterred.

He was my partner in grime and we would have all our time taken up by writing lines for Mr. Leonard. Ahh Happy days!

It was Mr. Leonard, (boo hisss!) who we figured had something to do with putting us into seperate classes and from then on we kind of lost touch even though we went to the same school. Luckily, however we've had the opportunity to get back in touch with each other over the past few years when Mark started working at the same place as my sister (or vice versa.) So after all at least we get to meet a couple of times a year.

At 16, Mark joined the Army in 2 Royal Anglian, and seems to have done very well with tours of the Falklands (baaa!) and Northern Ireland.

After leaving the army for a number of years he's recently re-joined the Royal Marines. Well done and good luck mate.

John Carty

John Carty (formerly Surtees) lived on the way to school so I would call for him in the morning and it was in our later schooling years we'd play truant and just stay at his house.

We went to Birmingham when we were 18 to see Iron Maiden and got great stageside views (recorded with a camera smuggled down my trousers).

Now John's Married to Sue and they have a baby girl who was born in 1987. Since leaving School John joined the Merchant Navy and has been sailing the world for the past twelve years.

This photo below shows us
in the Barge around the
time of my 19th Birthday.
From left to right we have
Andy Millar, me, Rick Still,
Ashley Butterfield and
Malcolm Roberts. Andrew Millar -

I knew Andy Millar firstly from Western Comprehensive which was our secondary school but also from the fact that I used to deliver newspapers down his street.

He sat in front of me in Technical Drawing with Mr. Adamson who, because of his brown-ish suit, his tweed-ish tie and his bear-ish appearance, we nick-named 'Bungle' just like the big guy in the bear suit from the British kids show 'Rainbow' This passed the time well. I often had a knack of making Andy laugh and even though he'd surpress his laughter he'd turn bright red.

It was with Andy that I skived off one Thursday afternoon when we should have been studying TD and took a trip over to Bradley Woods. What we should have done is to return to our own homes earlier than 'going home time' as the next day we found out that we'd been seen by at least four teachers on their seperate ways home.

Whilst working at Dial Printers in 1988 I received an invite to Gullivers nightclub as the owner, Pete, had his stationery printed at our shop. The first time I went I took Andy with me and he told me a couple of years ago that he's not missed a night since.

Matthew Morris

Here's a shot of Matthew Morris from the late eighties (Well, I'm hardly ever in town and on the odd occasion I do see him I never have a camera.) He and I have been in the same schools five through to sixteen, but more recently he's studied in Manchester which has seriously affected his accent (Ha! like I can talk.)

Matty used to sit behind me in Technical Drawing and abject boredom led us all to fool about in 'Bungle's'class.

Out for the night with Neil Swaby and co. for my 29th in Cleethorpes. In the picture is Neil (far right), Jamie who I know from the YMCA Gym (second from the right),The Pier,
Feb.99 me in the middle and two young ladies who were there at the time. Funnily enough I hadn't seen Neil for years - since school in fact - but the week before my 29th I was out with Tracy at the engagement party of one of her work colleagues and I met up with Neil, his cousin Grahame Taylor and another relation through marriage Robert Rice all of whom were in the same year as myself at school. In fact because of the similarity our names (only one letter difference) I was almost punished for Rob Rice playing truant.
